Enjoy the Moonlight beauty of the New England outdoors during a guided three-hour Charles River Canoe Tour at dusk.

This unique experience gift begins just 20 minutes west of Boston in Newton, Massachusetts. Here on the flat-water Lakes District of the Charles River you and your guest will meet with your friendly Guide and the rest of the group at the Newton Boathouse. There you will be fitted with all of the equipment you need for this aquatic moonlit adventure. Once suited up, you will receive a quick introduction to canoeing strokes and a brief overview of the tour route. Once ready, you'll push off just as the sun is beginning to set.

As the moon rises to light your way, you'll watch herons browsing along the banks and other wildlife settling in for the night. During this relaxing canoe trip, you will anchor for cheese and crackers, light snacks, non-alcoholic beverages, and dessert before returning to the boathouse/ This Charles River Canoe Tour is designed for all levels and no prior experience is necessary to enjoy the relaxing 2 to 3 mile paddle under the stars!

The Charles River Canoe Tours are offered on select days once a month, close to the time of the Full Moon, Memorial Day thru Labor Day, subject to availability. Tours typically begin between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.

The Moonlight Canoe Tours have a tour length of 3 hours and a total duration of approximately 3¼ hours.

The Newton Canoe Tours may be rescheduled by the Guide due to high winds, heavy rain, fog or other inclement weather.

What To Wear

Dress comfortably, flat, rubber-soled shoes and layers are recommended for this outdoor adventure.

Additional Information

Both participants will be in the same canoe. Participants should be able to swim and must wear life jackets at all times during the tour.

Individuals who are pregnant, have broken bones or other physical conditions which are considered unsafe are not eligible to participate.

Gratuity for your guide is not included and may be extended following the trip.

Moonlight tour of Charles River - fantastic! I want to go again

We absolutely loved this tour. The tour guides James and Eleanor were great - lots of interesting history and gorgeous views of the area, including lots of wildlife. I plan to go again and bring my two teenagers.

Wonderful

It was the perfect night- weather was great, beautiful sunset and new moon rising over the glass-like water, it was really wonderful! We got to eat snacks as we watched the moon appear, and we saw swans and a cormorant, never seen one before! Our tour guide was a historian too, so he had a lot of info about Waltham and the Charles River. I would definitely recommend this experience!

Moonlight tour

It was great. Only suggestion would be for the leaders to really tie the boats together and keep them together. Perhaps if there wete loops on the ends of yhe ropes and portable hooks o the boat. And have a small portable tray to put all the food on to pass around. Also a small potable light on the tray so you can actually see the food.

Moonlight Canoe Tour

This was an ok experience. It's hard with 12 boats full of people who don't know how to canoe and therefore don't have a way to communicate things like speed, direction and control to their boatmate. it seemed to me this would be a perfect couples' therapy event! Also, when the full moon is hidden by clouds, maybe some further illumination during the flotilla snack time would've been helpful. I could hear frustration from the people around me on that one. also, for some reason, the second guide that guided us all back went much slower than the leader on the way out, and I had to keep my husband from barreling past him to get to the docks. He was impatient with being banged in to because no one really knew how to be in the water with other boats, us included! still, an intriguing time.

Canoe Tour Review

We enjoyed our canoe trip of the Charles River. If anything, we would have prefered perhaps a more refined snack on the river rather than prepackaged quesadillas and pinwheels, some nicer cheeses and crackers and other more 'gourmet' items. This was a wedding gift from a friend.

Question: My boyfriend and I are going on the Moonlight Tour for our Anniversary. Is there any restriction to them bringing wine for their own personal consumption while on the boat?

Answer: Unfortunately participants are not permitted to bring alcoholic beverages along with them on the Charles River Moonlight Canoe Tour.
Question: My parents are traveling to Boston next month and thought they may enjoy the Moonlight Canoe tour on the Charles River. I noticed that it's only offered a few days per month. Do you expect them to open up any more dates?

Answer: The Charles River Moonlight Canoe Tour is only offered on or near the full moon from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Question: My grandparents expressed interest in the Charles River Moonlight Canoe Tour. I was thinking about purchasing the experience for their wedding anniversary but want to make sure they can handle it. How strenuous is the tour and how far will they go? Are there any other restrictions that I should be aware of before I purchase the certificate?

Answer: The moonlight tour travels 2 to 3 miles at a very leisurely pace. It's a tour and not a workout. The participants need to be able to swim, wear their life jackets at all times, and not have any physical conditions that would be considered unsafe for the tour.
