Learn to rock climb at one of the major rock climbing areas of North America, the Shawangunk Ridge (also known as the Shawangunk Mountains, or The Gunks). Pronounced by some locals as "SHONG-gum," this area is a ridge of mountains in Ulster County, Sullivan County and Orange County in the state of New York, extending from the northernmost point of New Jersey to the Catskill Mountains.

This outdoor adventure begins when you meet with your Experienced Guide at Mohonk Preserve. Your guide will assess your physical abilities and climbing skills to tailor the lesson towards you. Then it’s time to step into the harness and descend the rock wall! You will learn the basics of rock climbing techniques, the use of a harness and belay device, climbing knots and standard climbing communications.

So whether you are looking for an introduction to climbing or to brush up on your climbing skills your guide will show you the ropes and have you off of the ground in no time!

The Introductory Climbing Adventure of the Gunks is offered seven days a week, April thru November, subject to availability. The experience begins at 9:00 AM on weekdays and 8:30 AM on weekends.

How Long Is It

The Gunks Guided Rock Climb has a clinic time of 8 hours and a total duration of approximately 8½ hours.

Weather

Th Rock Climb Guided Adventure In The Gunks is dependent on favorable weather, and Climbing Lessons only take place when the conditions are safe. Lessons may be rescheduled by the Instructor due to high winds, heavy rain, fog or other inclement weather.

What To Wear

Please wear flexible and comfortable clothing appropriate for the season and outdoors. Climbers should bring a light rain jacket and wear hiking shoes or sneakers. Tight jeans and bike shorts are not recommended. All climbing equipment including climbing shoes will be provided by the school.

Additional Information

All necessary gear is included: shoes, harness, helmet and belay device. Please bring a lunch, and two liters of water or sports drinks, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat is also a good idea. Bring along a small to medium sized backpack to carry all your personal items in (you will not need to climb in the pack), and don't forget your camera! Transportation to The Gunks is not provided.

All Instructors are experienced climbers. Instructors are with the students at all times. Guide gratuity is not included; gratuities for rock climbing guides are customary and typically range from 15-20% of the total trip cost.

Participants are required to sign a Liability Release Form. If the participant is under the age of 18 a parent or guardian will need to sign the form prior to participation.

Participants are required to pay a $20.00 per person entrance fee into the Mohonk Preserve day of the experience.

Question: My friend and I will be doing the rock climbing lesson together this summer. Will they provide lunch?

Answer: You will need to bring your own llight lunch and lots of water, at least 2 liters per person in hot weather. Insect repellent and sun screen are useful when conditions indicate. You should have backpack with you to carry everything. You won't have to climb with the backpack.
Question: My wife gave me the Rock Climbing Lesson to brush up on my skills. (It's been years since I have been out). I still have some of my own equipment. Should I bring it?

Answer: Yes, it's better to use the equipment you'll be practicing in after the class. You're guide will inspect it before you head out to make sure it's good to go.
Question: I am thinking of giving this to my daughter for her birthday. Do you need a lot of upper body strength to climb?

Answer: Not if you have good technique. Even if you can't do a single pull up you can still climb. Ideally you'll use your legs more than your arms.
