Experience The Ride!

PicMonkey Collage

I recently flew across the pond to visit the Big Apple on vacation. I was delighted to be given the opportunity to partake in some of the exciting experiences we sell with our American sister- Experience Days.

Picture1The RIDE is like nothing I have ever seen before; operating as a moving theatre, the bus will guide you on a journey through Times Square and midtown Manhattan, where passengers can expect to see a host of theatrical performances in this unique moving show. The audience watches the tour in a cinematic experience facing sideways to look out through the floor to ceiling glass windows, allowing a panoramic viewpoint that allows the viewer to see New York in a whole new perspective.

Picture2Nat and I met our group outside 42nd street at 8th Avenue right outside Chevy’s Mexican Restaurant. The bus was hard to miss and we were shortly welcomed on board! Our tour guides for the evening were Jackie and Scott- both made the whole ride extremely entertaining, bouncing off each other to form a hilarious comedy duo.

11015907_10206074192999090_1516119792_nThe tour lasts 75 minutes and is half a theatrical show and half a tour bus. It was a combination of historical attractions stopping at New York’s most popular landmarks as well as a glance at the pure talent of some true New Yorker performers. First stop was Times Square where we were wished a ‘Happy New Year’ by our first performer of the night; I don’t want to spoil all the acts as most are dressed as regular pedestrians so keep your eyes peeled! Due to the set – up of the bus which includes stadium seating, 40 monitors, 3000 LED lights & surround sound, making the ride really stand out (especially at night). One of the most exciting parts of watching the acts unfold before us were passer-by’s own reactions who were equally as surprised as us!

10994814_10206074703611855_67049855_nThere was a lot of audience interaction and we were made to feel immediately at ease throughout the tour. The whole tour is extremely stimulating and consists of a talented ensemble of singers, dancers, musicians, actors and rappers so you will be sure to find something of interest whatever your preference!  This experience is a rarity in that it is appropriate for all ages and would be perfect for the whole family.

ride

Thank you so much The RIDE for such an energetic and engaging fun journey through NYC. Nat and I note it as our favourite experience in NYC and I would not hesitate to recommend this experience to anyone visiting or staying in New York!

Williamsburg Food Tour

PicMonkey Collage

This Williamsburg Food walking tour is an ideal gift for anyone with a love of food and authentic Brooklyn culture. The tour begins in Eastern Williamsburg, a multi-ethnic area, with a predominantly Latin-American and Hispanic community. The diversity of cultures runs through the heart of the market, pushcarts and stalls alike.

11001801_10206020821864845_3956870147142178179_n

Nat and I met the group and our tour guide- Cindy at Princesa Bakery and Restaurant at 11.00am. We were warmly greeted with sweet tea and coffee and Puerto Rican baked goods, to make a delicious breakfast.

10629818_10206021422599863_8246684748881252654_n

Cindy, our tour guide, personified the rich charm of Williamsburg and offered a unique personal experience, with humour and interesting anecdotes along the way. The raw roots and rich cultural heritage of Williamsburg were truly exposed and celebrated during this exploration of Brooklyns’ hidden gems, with the tour built around interviews with neighbourhood residents and local business owners.

13981_10206020818224754_7293774364011015319_n

Cindy’s food expertise was apparent from the palate of rich exotic flavours that we tasted on the tour – from the colourful flavours of Caribbean patties, to the weird but wonderful pungency of cactuses. The natural character of Williamsburg entranced us throughout, with its unusual idiosyncrasies including a real Banksy painting on route, as well as its rich history, dating back to the 1930s.

10981539_10206020821664840_1776486241556494648_n

After visiting a Mexican supermarket, we were taken to Moore Street Market – built in 1941, marking the end of the pushcart era, today it is a hub for the Spanish speaking community. The market offers a veritable gathering of Latin American and Caribbean delicacies including my personal favourite; churros! Immediately, upon entering the market, we were engulfed by the rich aromas of the food.

10951421_10206021422359857_7992086014414896306_n

Cindy clearly had a genuine interest not only in the culture of the neighbourhood but also of each individual business owner who she had clearly built a lovely friendship with over time.

10984035_10206021422079850_340865554377374999_n

Nat and I were above all were overwhelmed with the generosity of each vendor, as they gave us huge food portions to taste. We had so much left over that we had to take some home…so I’d advise that you arrive with an empty stomach! You will leave with a new appreciation of Williamsburg and a craving to taste the authenticities of Latin America once more.

10989966_10206020819064775_4389743266147025142_n

The whole day gave me a new perspective of Williamsburg and is perfect for any of you fabulous foodies and culture vultures alike. Thank you Cindy!

Gifts For Pittsburgh

1000px-Pittsburgh_dawn_city_pano

So, you need to get gifts for the Pittsburgher’s in your life? We’re here to help! As usual, our first and best piece of advice is that when you buy a gift, you think about the person you’re buying for and get them what they’ll like. Sounds pretty easy, right? Well, it is, mostly. But in the event that you have ‘buyer’s block’, and you just can’t seem to figure out what to get for your Pittsburgh friends and family, read on to get some inspiration from our list of… well, stereotypes about Pittsburghers.

800px-Heinz_Field01Steelers stuff. Get them Steelers anything. Folks from the ‘Burgh love them some Steelers, and the best thing about this kind of a gift is that you can adapt it to suit all kinds of budgets. It’s a pretty safe bet that if you get them something yellow and black, they’ll be happy. If you’re loaded, get them some season tickets. If you’re doing ok, maybe a jersey and tickets to a game. If you’re neither of those things, any bit of cool Steeler’s merchandise will be much appreciated.

Do they drive? If so, have you considered getting them some new lawn chairs? If you/they are from Pittsburgh, you’ll know why. If you’re not, well, let us explain. Pittsburgh people do this thing, particularly in heavy snow, where they mark their parking territory with lawn chairs. It’s not a legal thing. There are no written rules… but park in someone else’s chaired spot, and watch what happens… So yeah, if they drive, get em some new parking chairs. If they’re new drivers, your gift could indoctrinate them into a lifetime of parking etiquette. What a gift!

1507881_10205622012534861_5628639897945524913_nPittsburghers like to have a good time. For some reason, this often seems to involve going on some terrifying rides. In fact, Pittsburgh has a bit of a history with fairground fun -it was a Pittsburgher who invented the Ferris Wheel. If they like a thrill, take ‘em to a fairground and get nauseous with them… or check out some of the more extreme adventures you can get here on ExperienceDays.com.

Fathers Day Blog 1Another way Pittsburgh folk like to unwind is with booze – and the city is become better and better known for its craft beers and microbreweries. If your friend enjoys a cold frosty one, take them on a brewery tour (please note, this is different to a bar crawl), to sample some of the city’s best suds.

What about a gift hamper full of Pittsburgh food and drink? This is an amazing gift for a pittsburgher who’s moved away, and might be longing for a little taste of home. If you really miss them, send them a photo of a Primanti Brothers sandwich, with the the fries and the coleslaw all on there… in fact, send them a gift certificate for Primanti Bros. They’ll be back within a month… Maybe leave some lawn chairs out for them…

Gifts For Philadelphia

philadelphia1

Looking for the perfect gift for the Philadelphian in your life? Well, the ever-helpful crew here at Experience Days are here to make your Philly gift giving experience that little bit smoother. We’ve gathered some of the longest-held generalisations about Philadelphia folk, and used them to create the ultimate stereotype-filled Philly gift guide. Of course, we always recommend buying for the individual, but if yousers are looking for an extra special jawn for your Philly friends, read on….

Philadelphia-Movie-Tour_300x240

Philadelphia is the hometown and setting of some of the greatest. Movies. Of. All. Time. If they’re a movie buff, or just a Philly buff, get ‘em a tour of some of the city’s most famous movie locations. We’re talking Sixth Sense, Philadelphia, 12 Monkeys, Marley & Me, oh and what was that other one?… Ahhh, gotcha – obviously, Rocky features heavily, after all it is, without doubt, the city’s greatest cinematic export. ADRIANNNNNN!

Philadelphia2

A trip to the Jersey Shore. Come on, yousers know youse love it down the shore! You know, a lot of Philadelphians will deny these down to the ground, but in their cheesesteak lovin’ hearts they know it’s true, so grab your sunscreen and your sequins because it’s on! Nearly half a million Philadelphians head for the shore every year, so why not take the special Philly friend in your life off for a weekend of bronzing, boozing, and generally having a great time?!

Chinatown1What about an ‘I DON’T heart NY’ tee? There’s always been a bit of a… friendly… rivalry between Philadelphia and New York. In fact, scratch that – don’t get ‘em that tee – this is the kind of rivalry that isn’t talked about or acknowledged. It’s like Nathaniel Burt said in ‘The Perennial Philadelphian’… “If Philadelphians can be said to be self-conscious about anything, it is in their desire not to be like New Yorkers or what they think of as New Yorkers”…

A years supply of hoagies. Not subs. Hoagies. Don’t get it twisted. Oh, and speaking of twisted…NYC Food Cart Tour Walking Tour

Get them some Pretzels. And beer. Or even better, a beer & pretzel tour around the city. Create your own, or find one that’s already set up. The fact is that beer and soft pretzels have been part of the city’s very soul since William Frampton’s brewery opened in 1683, and then its perfect accompaniment, the soft pretzel, was baked into existence some time around the mid 1800s. For extra brownie points, take a detour to Wawa for some water ice to dip a pretzel in!

I could say that Philadelphians love cheesesteaks, but the truth is, every right minded person on this planet loves cheesesteaks.Take them to Barclay Prime and treat them to a $100 cheesesteak. This bad boy sandwich is packed with sauteed fois gras, Taleggio cheese at $17 per pound, caramelized onions, heirloom shaved tomatoes and shaved truffles that ring up at NINE HUNDRED DOLLARS per pound. This is the most baller cheesesteak in existence, so it’s perfect for a special (or slightly ridiculous) occasion…Philly Cheesesteak

Wedding Gift Guide

US Wedding HeaderLet’s just get this first and most important point out of the way – if the couple have registered, and if you know where they have registered, and you can afford to get them something from their registry, you simply buy them something from their chosen wishlist. Simple! You’re welcome…

US Wedding 1But it’s not always that simple, is it? Buying the perfect wedding gift can be a little stressful, even if the couple have registered somewhere. In fact, buying a gift from the registry list can prove to be just as tricky as thinking of something yourself, despite how simple a concept the registry is at face value. One of the main problems people have when buying wedding gifts from a list is that they can’t afford to buy anything on the registry, or that gifts on the registry that are within their budget are already gone by the time they get there.

And while a huge amount of couples now register at one or more stores, not all do, in which case you might feel a little out to sea when it comes to picking something for them. On that note, here are our top five tips for buying wedding gifts:

US Wedding 21. Let your relationship to the couple dictate how much you spend. Lots of people do the whole ‘calculating the cost of the plate’ thing, but really, if you were to follow that rule you might end up spending more on an extravagant couple you hardly know than on your less flashy, but closer-than-close best friends.

2. If you can’t afford anything on the register but you want to give something a little memorable, pool resources. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, pooling resources is the best way to get over budgetary issues, or concerns about giving gifts that you feel might look a little flimsy. Ask some friends who are going to the wedding too, and turn those wine glasses into a weekend getaway.

US Wedding 33. If you can’t find anyone to pool with, and you can’t afford anything that’s on the registry, then it’s ok to go a little bit rogue. Just a little, though! We suggest taking a look at the list again, and getting your clues from that. If they love Le Crueset and have asked for a matching set of red casseroles, get them a matching red lasagne dish.

4. Cash is king. Especially if it’s something they’ve gently hinted they’d like. If you can’t figure out where they’re registered, and you get the feeling that a monetary gift is preferred, don’t ask them directly. Ask family or other friends instead – it’s quite likely that they’ll be subtly spreading the word anyhow!

US Wedding 45. If they’ve not registered, you can have a little fun! But make sure to keep the couple in mind; think of what they’d like, not what you like. If you know where they’re going on their honeymoon, an awesome experiential gift certificate for when they get there is a great idea, or even something like champagne and a breakfast-in-bed at their hotel.

Happy shopping!

Anniversary Gift Guide

US Anniversary HeaderAnniversary gifts might not require as much thought and cost as wedding gifts or Christmas gifts, but they are a wonderful way to mark a special and happy occasion, and chances are, if you are looking to get one at all then you want to get it right. Whether it’s a paper or a platinum anniversary is irrelevant, the point is that two people are celebrating a happy, loving partnership, and you want to make sure your gift marks the occasion as it should!

Whether you’re buying an anniversary gift for your other half or you’re buying one for a happy couple you know and love, there are a few general rules and things that you can take into consideration, to help you choose an anniversary gift that they will really love.

US Anniversary 1Buy for the couple, even if you know one of them a little more than the other. Their anniversary is about both of them equally, so even if one is super easy to buy for and the other one leaves you scratching your head in the socks department, you really should get something that they’ll both enjoy.

US Anniversary 2You can always refer to the old traditional anniversary gift list – but put a little imagination into it! If they’ve been married for one year, the traditional gift is paper. Two years, it’s cotton; five is wood. Take those traditions and turn them into something really fun and memorable. If it’s paper, you could make a photo album of their life together so far. Cotton? A hammock for two for the garden. Wood could be a night or weekend in a log cabin – and hey, if they’ve been married twenty years and you’re loaded, turn that china anniversary into the holiday of a lifetime (and then befriend us please).

US Anniversary 3Give according to their hobbies – there’s probably at least one thing they like to do together, so have a think and get them something that reflects a happy, lovely part of their relationship. Maybe they like to go walking or golfing, maybe they cook together, or it could be something more extreme that they’re into like snowboarding or scuba diving. Spend a little time thinking about what it is they love to do, and buy them a gift that reflects that. If you’re really stuck, a gift certificate for dinner somewhere is generally a fairly safe bet; everyone eats, after all!

US Anniversary 4If you’re buying this gift for your significant other, you are free to disregard all the rules, after all you know them – and yourselves as a couple – far better than we do! But even other halves can have a little trouble sometimes, so if you’re struggling, just take the same advice that we’ve given to everyone else. Get something for both of you to enjoy together, and you can’t go far wrong. Oh, and happy anniversary!
